9th annual weekend getaway!

It was our 9th year going to Katie's family camp.  I love the fact that we've gone every year for so long, and plan to for as long as we can.  It's such a fun retreat to have and look back on how things have changed.  And looking back on my post last year, our hopes came true, and Ephraim got to enjoy this first year at camp!

First lake "swim." It was a little cold!
(don't mind the pink and purple, poor EJ gets some borrowed items from his two girl cousins ;))

8th annual weekend getaway!

This past weekend we had our 8th annual weekend trip to Katie's family's cottage on Lake Moraine in Hamilton, NY.  I love that we have kept this tradition up so long, and plan to continue it as long as possible!

Katie was practicing her photography skills, so we got tons of great pictures this year!  I've shared a few below.  We enjoyed swimming (well, mostly floating) in the lake, a bonfire and s'mores, great food, canoeing, and relaxation.

I did picture us having a little one with us this year, but we'll just hope that next year it will be true.  At least we were able to bring Mendon again, who enjoyed it lots!  We still didn't get her to swim, but she wanted to very badly!

annual weekend getaway

This past weekend we had our 7th (WOW!) annual weekend getaway to Katie's family's cottage.  We keep growing each year, and this year was Katie and Aaron's newlywed summer, Mendon joined Buddy as dog guests, and Jeremiah joined us for the first time (well...he was there last year, secretively ;)).

We attempted for two days to get Mendon to swim, but she wasn't having it.  She did enjoy playing in the water, as long as she could still stand.  We could tell she wanted to get in so badly, and at one point she fell in off the dock due to her own curiosity.  We learned that she can swim, but she immediately booked it to shore.  At least she likes to play in the water.  That's what we get for having a mastiff I guess :)

We had a blast, like always :) Even though it rained some of the time, we had a great time playing games and catching up.  We ended the nights with bonfires, swam in the lake, and went to the annual dinner spot, Ye Olde Pizza Pub!

We talked about how it will be fun to see our annual pictures as we continue to expand.  We also said it would be funny in 20 years from now to see how we look (and it was crazy to think that we'd then possibly have some kids in college!).  Thanks again for sharing your cottage, Katie!

weekend with parentals

We headed down to G-town to spend one last weekend there with my parents before they move.  We planned to eat our way through the places that have become quite frequent for us.  Friday night we had giant calzones from La Via Pizzeria, celebrated mom's birthday, and relaxed.  A musician from Tennessee, Justin Terry, was also staying at their house this weekend and did a concert on Saturday, so we met him.

Saturday morning Mendon gave mom a scare when she got out and ran down the street to a neighbor's house.  The mail woman had just been over talking to my mom, and when my mom opened the door to come back in, Mendon saw the opportunity and ran out after her.  Thankfully, the mail woman is friends with my parents, and Mendon just wanted to play, so she was able to catch her and was on her way back as Col and I stumbled out in our pj's with treats.

After dad finished his sermon, we headed out to visit some nearby Amish farms and shops.  We've never been to them even though they are close by.  It was so fun to drive around and look for handmade signs and stop at whatever caught our eyes.  Most of the shops were right on each family's farm.  We bought cookies, a whoopee pie, bread, chocolates (sooo good), my parents got a quilted pillow, and the best stop was a toy shop.  The guy there was hilarious and played a few good practical jokes on us.  My parents got a little wooden wagon with painted ABC blocks that go in it for future Little L.  It's already found its way to one of the shelves in the nursery :) We also stopped at an Alpaca farm and got to see them up close and hear more about their fleece and the process to make yarn out of it, which was neat.  After our shopping spree, we headed back to town and went to the concert at the park right next to the church.  We enjoyed ice cream and some southern gospel/country music.  Col and I took Mendon for a walk, updated our medical grids for the adoption, and caught some HGTV.  When my parents got home from church that evening, we went to Red's for dinner and relaxed at home.

On Sunday we enjoyed church and the 20-somethings class my parents lead.  It was fun to see people and talk about our adoption.  Mom, Col and I went to the store to get some ear drops for Mendon as she woke up shaking her head nonstop, was itching, and had some yucky discharge.  Thankfully, after even just one use, she was doing much better.  My parents had a grad party to go to, so Col and I were going to tag along, and I was going to ride there with dad on his motorcycle because I've been craving a motorcycle ride lately.  We stopped at the store and when we tried to leave, the bike was dead.  After waiting for mom and Col to come pick us up, it started up again right before they got there.  We ended up just driving together to the party, but as mom and Col got the food ready for dinner, dad took me out for a nice long ride.  There is nothing like the wind blowing at you and the freedom of the countryside flying by!

We enjoyed a nice cookout for dinner and Kan Jam before heading back home.  It might have been our last weekend there staying with mom and dad, but I know we'll be back to visit the church someday.  Thankful for a fun weekend and the fact that we'll get to see my parents more often soon :)

weekend trip to g-town

This weekend I planned an impromptu trip to visit my parents.  Col stayed home and dog sat for another one of our friend's dogs, also named Buddy, while I had plans to make strawberry jam with mom and go through all of my leftover childhood stuff that was still stored there (the rents are forcing it out now that we have our own house).

First on the agenda: homemade strawberry jam.  We got the strawberries from a local stand, and went to work!

Now it's really saying something that I got this pic of us, as my mom usually shies from the camera
(thanks for letting me take this mom!).  I really wanted to get us in our aprons, but I was laughing so hard because she was shoving that cracker in my mouth while I was trying to take the pic!
Double batch - yum!
Next on the agenda: two trips to the hardware store to fix a leaky kitchen sink, where the nice man and my mom went back and forth with each other about what should be under her kitchen sink but what she was actually seeing.  My mom is the handy one in our family, so I believed her, but it was funny watching her try to show him a picture on her tiny non-smart phone and him explain his side of things.  After vowing to take pics on my phone and come back with what we found, we went home, took apart the sink, brought back the parts, and the guy was blown away by the fact that it was indeed different than usual.

Aside: on our way out of the hardware store the first time, we stopped by a beloved consignment boutique.  Mom found some gender-neutral onesies, which then led to a cute puppy bib that I had to get.  First purchase for future baby Leathersich: check!

Half the reason I came down: I tackled the one closet that I had stuff in at my parents' house.  You know, it didn't look like a lot, but once it was all out, man oh man!  Why do I have so much stuff!?  It was full of all that childhood memorabilia that you feel is important but as time goes on are able to part with.  I had fun looking through old papers, letters, notes, and school work (what a nerd, why did I save my school projects and work dated back to the early 90's?).  Then, I had to go through all the toys that I had purposely saved for future use when my parents moved to G-town 6 years ago.  Again, I was able to pare down what I still wanted by more than half, but it was sooo fun to go through (ahem, play) with them again.  Mom and dad made fun of me as I said which horses went with what tack or accessories, which Polly Pocket was my original, and we had fun pulling out old Barbies (with their hands partially chewed off from mice from their stay in the shed before my parents moved.  We had to pick an old mouse nest out of one Barbie's hair...needless to say, she didn't make it to the garage sale pile).

Ah memories.  It felt kind of weird, and I didn't know where I fit for a bit.  Here I am, in the process of adopting a baby, buying my first baby-related items, and then going through old memories and toys.  I felt like an adult on my own with a husband, house, and dog, but then like a kid in the transition of childhood still living with her parents.  It was fun to do though, and I'm happy that while I did bring home a decent amount of stuff, I know that it's gone through, holds special importance, and will hopefully be used by our children someday!

Sunday after church I helped mom with the house while dad was at a benefit walk, and we trimmed, raked, and power washed the house.  It was a pain getting the stinkin' ladder where we needed it, but mom was happy with her power washing results, so that's what matters.

Lastly, we were able to Skype with Zack and go through some of his old clothes.  It was hilarious holding articles of clothing up to the computer and seeing if he wanted to keep them or not.  We laughed a lot as our video feed kept getting stuck and looping us into ridiculous back-and-forth rapping motions.  It was probably one of the best Skype times yet.

I headed back early Sunday evening, and was enthusiastically greeted by hubby and pup.  While unloading my car, Mendon hopped into the front seat, and plopped down.  She refused to get out the entire time we were taking things into the house, and we eventually forced her out when we were done.  I guess someone wasn't happy with me leaving for the weekend without her!
