ultimate compromise

In addition to having completely different personalities, my husband and I have body temperatures comparable to a magnet. Mine seems to always hover around 0 degrees (-) while his likes to hang out in the tropics (+). This is especially apparent at night when we try to share the same bed. In the 9 months that we’ve been married, I’ve already given up on having the comforter perfectly tucked in at all times (after a few months of tucking it in only to re-tuck it in every day, I decided I wasn’t going to win the battle…ever), although I’m still trying to accept the fact that we can’t utilize all of the matching parts of our bedding set (such as the extra throw that is supposed to stay situated at the foot of the bed serving its decorative purpose. To my husband, this throw supposedly adds an additional 50 degrees to his feet). Colin subscribes to the notion that his feet must be free to stick out at all times in order to regulate his body temperature (thus the comforter always being un-tucked), whereas he complains about the weight of all my blankets (not to mention the fact that I’m fully covered in fleece pants, long-sleeved tops, and fuzzy socks).

When we got married, I had to grieve the loss of my fleece (not flannel, actual fleece = AMAZING) sheets, which I would never again be able to enjoy. In addition to being “too warm,” they just wouldn’t have the “cold spots” that Colin searches for throughout the night. I’ve often joked with my friends about how we need to create half-fleece/half-cotton sheets in order to appease both of us. In steps my handy dandy mom! After long thought about the best way to go about creating this non-existent product, she took my twin fleece sheets and sewed them onto a set of queen cotton ones. I put them on our bed last night, and alas, we have reached the ultimate compromise for our sleeping differences! No more overheated or Raynaud’s inducing nights for Colin and me. Thanks mom, for being such a problem-solver!

the start of something new

I've always been an avid writer and most recently have missed simply writing for the fun of it. Working part-time at a literary center where people always ask about what I write (and having to say that I haven't been...) has made me think about the fact that yes, I have an English degree for a reason! I love reading friends' blogs and began thinking about how much fun it would be to have my own virtual space to spill out my thoughts and our comical adventures, which could also serve as a way to keep those who are interested updated on the happenings of our life together.

Many friends have encouraged me to create one, but when I first brought it up to my husband, he didn't exactly jump for joy (and with good reason as I seem to be inclined to include every single detail of a story or my day while recounting it to others, and while my detail-oriented mind serves me well in the workplace, he was afraid others might find such pieces of information excruciatingly minute). However, God kept it on my heart, and just last week one of my co-workers told me she thought that I should have a blog to show off the "witty" side of me that many don't know.

While talking the other evening and thoroughly enjoying the time to just sit and chat with each other, Colin stated that he thought I should start my blog. He said it would be fun and was also interested in posting a "Col"umn here and there, as he does have a great sense of humor and may be able to help eliminate the boredom caused by my matter-of-fact nature. So here we are, embarking on a blogging adventure together! I promise to keep my details in check and not post the mundane, and this promises to be an interesting ride!
